Route 66 bicycle-camping (Cady Mountains, Sleeping Beauty and Kelso Dunes Wilderness), November 2011

I visited the Broadwell Dry Lake and Kelso Dunes Wilderness Area off Route 66, and just outside Mojave National Preserve, this time last year and decided that there's more I want to explore there. So here I am again! I'll log 185 combined bicycle and hiking miles and enjoy very pleasant autumn weather during this 8-day trip.

Route 66 bicycle ride from Barstow to Sleeping Beauty Mountains foothills near Ludlow, CA: Day 1

Album: Route 66 bicycle ride from Barstow to Sleeping Beauty Mountains foothills near Ludlow, CA: Day 1

After yesterday's train and bus ride to Barstow, CA, to start this trip... 48 miles, cool, cloudy weather, but I'm riding into a strong headwind all day long (the wind direction here is usually in the opposite direction). Ugh!

Sleeping Beauty mountain hike: Day 2

Album: Sleeping Beauty mountain hike: Day 2

4.2 hiking miles round-trip from my tent to a summit in the Sleeping Beauty range. Feels like much more because of the steep, rocky hills (approx. 1500 feet elevation gain). An almost-warm afternoon (60F), I drink about 2 litres of water.

Mojave Desert bicycle ride from Sleeping Beauty mountains to north side of Kelso Dunes Wilderness: Day 3

Album: Mojave Desert bicycle ride from Sleeping Beauty mountains to north side of Kelso Dunes Wilderness: Day 3

Beautiful, sunny morning. The inside of my thighs feel bruised from yesterday's short, steep hike. 24.9 bicycle miles, with about 1200 feet of elevation drop. A fun and easy ride with a stop at the Ludlow Café for home-cooked lunch. This is vacation!

Hyten Spring hike, Kelso Dunes Wilderness: Day 4

Album: Hyten Spring hike, Kelso Dunes Wilderness: Day 4

I'm back! I wanted to do this hike to Hyten Spring last year. I see no other humans today. 19 hiking miles and about 2200 feet of easy elevation gain. Kelso Dunes Wilderness does not contain the Kelso Dunes, but it's a nice, remote area to explore on foot

Bicycle ride the length of Broadwell Dry Lake on the way back to Ludlow, Thanksgiving Day: Day 5

Album: Bicycle ride the length of Broadwell Dry Lake on the way back to Ludlow, Thanksgiving Day: Day 5

A pleasant lazy day, just 14.7 miles across Broadwell Dry Lake to get back to Ludlow for a meal and motel room. High 60s this afternoon and almost hot while pedaling in the sunshine, despite the cool breeze.

Cady Mountains day hike: Day 7

Album: Cady Mountains day hike: Day 7

A gorgeous fall Mojave Desert day, perfect for today's moderate hike into the rocky hills: no precipitation and a high of 71F and low of 43F. 8.3 miles and about 2000 feet of elevation gain.

Cady Mountains to Barstow by bicycle; one last day: Day 8

Album: Cady Mountains to Barstow by bicycle; one last day: Day 8

46.2 bicycle miles and about 1000 feet of elevation gain. Perfect weather today: a cool fall breeze, but warm enough that I could wear short pants if I wanted, however, not necessary. Amtrak bus and train back to San José out of Barstow tomorrow morning.
